Speaker of Parliament To Address Ghanaians Today

The speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin is set to address the media on current happenings in parliament and related issues today, Wednesday, 6th November, 2024.

In a press statement released by Parliament Public Affairs Directorate on Tuesday 5th November, 2024, the speaker is expected to update Ghanaians through the media on important issues affecting the legislative arm of government and the nation at large.

It would be recalled that the speaker of Parliament recently declared four seats of parliament vacant following the decision of three of those MPs to contest for the upcoming elections as independent candidates with the fourth one as an independent candidate seeking to contest the election on the ticket of the NPP.

The move by the speaker resulted in a historic change of events in parliament seeing the NDC which was the minority group in parliament with 37 members now claiming the majority position with 36 members while the NPP which had 37 members plus 1 independent candidate now becoming 35 members.

Hon. Ato Forson: Minority Leader

This forced the Hon. Afenyo Markin to file a case at the Supreme Court which subsequently resulted in the court seeking to stop the speaker and demand a reverse of his decision pending a final decision from the court.

Afenyo Markin: Majority Leader

This however further aggravated the situation when the NDC group in parliament insisted that they must sit at the majority seat leading to the NPP staging a walkout and subsequently compelling the speaker to adjourn parliament indefinitely and moved to file against the decision of the court which was rejected.

The NPP group however, through the standing orders of parliament signed a petition to force the speaker to recall parliament tomorrow Thursday, 7th November, 2024. Meanwhile a member of the NDC group Hon. Rockson Nelson Dapheamapkor has allegedly gone to the court seeking to stop the speaker from recalling parliament.

With all these developments taking place in parliament with the upcoming general election just around the Conner, it is indeed important that the speaker address the press for us to know the way forward in all of this.
