Kufour Advises Bagbin Over Parliamentary Stand-Off

Former president, His Excellency John Ajekum Kufour has urged the speaker of parliament Right Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin to show leadership in the handling current happenings in the house of parliament as they have the tendency of undermining his integrity.

According to the Former President, the situation in Parliament is “embarrassing” and does not speak well of the nation’s democratic governance.

The parliament of Ghana has over past weeks suffered criticisms from Ghanaians and beyond following the sitting positions controversy which was erupted from the speaker’s decision to declare some four seats as vacant.

The Supreme Court consequently stayed the speaker’s decision which further deepens the wounds of parliament causing a stand-off between the Majority and Minority caucuses as to who sits at the right hand side of the speaker.

This led to the speaker adjourning the house indefinitely for the second time in one month as the NPP side of the house refrained themselves from entering the house claiming that the speaker must order the NDC side to sit at their former place which is the left hand side (minority side).

In view of these push and pull attitude coming from the supposed representatives of the citizens, the former President John Ajekum Kufour has called on the speaker to consider the negative impact that the current situation will have on his personality and act in good faith as a leader.

Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, he urged the speaker to prioritise decorum and stability in parliament warning that if left unchecked, the situation may tarnish the image of the speaker and render his contributions to the political development of the country as useless.

I will call on the speaker to demonstrate leadership because what is going on in parliament is embarrassing and can destroy his good record” he added.
