Angel Carbonu Explains End of Repeat System in SHS

Angel Carbonu, the National President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), has shed light on a major change in Ghana’s education policy that eliminates the practice of repeating a year in Senior High School (SHS).

Carbonu explained that the new policy, which aims to reduce school dropouts and promote inclusive education, will provide additional support and resources to students who struggle academically instead of requiring them to repeat a year.

He argued that the old repeat system was largely ineffective, often leading to frustration, demotivation, and an increased likelihood of students leaving school altogether. The revised approach focuses on helping students address their challenges and reach their full potential.

The policy is also intended to reduce the stigma surrounding failure, creating an environment where students feel empowered to take risks, learn from mistakes, and grow without fear of punishment.

Carbonu highlighted that the policy aligns with international best practices, moving away from punitive measures to adopt more inclusive strategies that support student success.

Addressing concerns about academic standards, he assured that the quality of education would not be compromised. Instead, the focus would shift to a more holistic and supportive model that prioritizes the overall well-being and success of students.

As Ghana’s education system evolves, this shift marks a significant move towards a more inclusive and student-centered approach, aiming to reduce dropouts, enhance academic achievement, and create a positive educational experience for all.
