AFCON 2025: Otto Addo Defends Black Stars’ Offense After Goalless Stalemate with Sudan

Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team head coach, Otto Addo, has stepped up to defend his forwards after the Black Stars’ goalless draw against Sudan in a 2025 AFCON qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Addo’s defense comes as a response to mounting criticism, with many fans and analysts pointing out the team’s missed chances that could have secured a much-needed victory.

Despite the frustration stemming from their inability to clinch their first win in three AFCON qualifying matches, Addo remains steadfast in his belief in his team’s offensive potential.

The match saw Ghana’s forwards, Inaki Williams and Antoine Semenyo, along with creative midfielder Mohammed Kudus, struggling to find the back of the net despite having several clear opportunities.

Their wastefulness in front of goal has been a focal point of criticism, as these missed chances have left Ghana in a precarious position in Group F.

Looking ahead, Ghana will have a chance at redemption when they face Sudan again on Monday, October 14, at 13:00 GMT. The match will take place in Libya, chosen as a neutral venue due to ongoing security concerns in Sudan.

Addo expressed his confidence that his forwards will bounce back and deliver a better performance in the upcoming fixture.

“I think they’ve shown on every level they can score. I believe in them; they will score in the next game,” Addo stated, backing his players to overcome their recent struggles.

Currently, Ghana sits in third place in Group F with just two points from three games, while Sudan holds the second spot with four points. The upcoming match against Sudan is crucial for Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.

The team last missed out on an AFCON in 2004, and failing to qualify this time around would be a significant setback.

Addo’s defense of his forwards highlights his confidence in their abilities and his belief that they can rise to the occasion. With the pressure mounting and the stakes high, Ghana’s next performance will be pivotal in determining their path forward in the AFCON qualifiers.

The Black Stars will need to regroup, sharpen their finishing, and capitalize on their opportunities to keep their qualification hopes alive.
