Mahama’s Governance Reform: Ministries Reduced from 30 to 23

His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has reduced the number of ministries from 30 to 23, formalizing this decision through an executive instrument signed on January 9, 2025.

By this, some notable ministries like the Ministry of Information, the Ministry of Railways Development, Monitoring, and Evaluation, the Ministry of Regional Reorganization and Development, and the Aviation Ministry will no longer be in existence.

This forms part of President Mahama’s promise to reduce the size of his government to not more than 60 ministers.

So far, the first batch of ministerial appointments has been made and is scheduled to appear before the appointment committee of parliament beginning Monday, 13th January 2025.

Meanwhile, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, has commended President Mahama for reducing the number of ministries from 30 to 23.

He describes the move as “a step in the right direction.”.

Professor Gyampo had been a major critic of the outgone government, disputing many of its initiatives in a quest for accountability and good governance.

To him, 123 ministers and deputies appointed during the erstwhile Akufo-Addo-Bawumia’s government were just a toll on the country’s resources.

Many governance experts and economists had criticized the appointment of 123 ministers by the previous government, emphasizing that they were irrelevant when looking at the country’s resources and its expenditure.
