E-levy is a progress retarder – Ato Forson

The Finance Minister- Designate, Dr.Cassiel Ato Forson has emphasized that E-levy is a policy that significantly impedes the economic growth of a country, effectively stifling its development and progress.
Mr. Forson made these remarks in response to a question posed by MP for North Tongu, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa during the Appointment Committee’s vetting process on January 13, 2025.
According to Mr Forson, as a tax practitioner, he finds it challenging to categorize E-levy. He clarified that his reservations do not stem from the revenue generated by the levy, but rather from its detrimental impact on the country’s cash-light economy, which he believes hinders progress.
“I don’t know how to classify the E-levy as a tax practitioner. Mr. Chairman, it doesn’t mean that I do not recognize that the E-levy brings certain revenue. But the fact remains that the E-levy retards our progress.”
He emphasized that he would be honored to declare the abolition of the E-levy as part of the inaugural budget, which would solidify his commitment to Ghanaians.
“I will be privileged, and I will announce that, we have abolished the E-levy as part of our first budget. Recognizing my earlier stand and commitment.”, he said.
“I can assure you E-levy will go in the next, within the 120 days calendar”, he concluded.
