Fire outbreaks: Expert criticizes One District, One fire Tender policy

A public safety advocate, Nana Annor Amihere II, has asserted that the One District, One Fire Tender policy that is being advocated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in parliament is not the ideal way to address the issue of fire outbreaks in the country.

According to him, having fire tenders in every district is pointless if the local population is not educated on preventive measures and how to use them effectively.

Nana Annor Amihere II, in an interview with Joy News on Thursday, February 6, emphasized that tackling the issue of fire outbreaks should be done at its inception. He stressed that individuals should be equipped with the knowledge to prevent fire outbreaks and to use fire extinguishers effectively to combat small fires, thereby preventing them from escalating and requiring the intervention of firefighters.

“If you bring in fire tenders that are being proposed and you don’t have the wherewithal and the measures in place to be able to utilize them appropriately, what will be the need for we to have one district, one fire tender?”

He believes that fire tenders are huge and so they make it difficult to maneuver through the narrow streets in the country, and so the pressing need to solve fire outbreaks is putting preventive measures in place to avoid fire outbreaks.

The public safety advocate further advised that the government should rather focus on the safety of the fire service personnel in the country by providing them with sufficient safety kits they need so that they can perform better, rather than getting fire tenders for every district, which might end up not being useful.

“The basic things that the fire service personnel require to protect themselves to be able to attend to fire when they are called upon are not available. The safety of the fire officers must be guaranteed before they put themselves at risk.”
