Yamoransa Model Lab Program Achieves Significant BECE Passing Rate Increase

A recent study has revealed that the Yamoransa Model Lab Program has led to a remarkable 14.4% increase in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) passing rate for schools utilizing its laboratory facilities, compared to a mere 1% increase in other schools.
This study, conducted from 2021 to 2023, highlights the program’s effectiveness in enhancing educational outcomes.
At the Annual Impact Roundtable Discussion and Robotic Competition held in Accra, Japhet Aryiku, Executive Director of the Helping Africa Foundation, emphasized the need for government support to expand the program.

He urged successive administrations to incorporate the construction of lab centers into future budgets, particularly the 2026-2027 budget, to further advance Ghana’s digitalization and technology initiatives.
Aryiku noted that the program significantly benefits students in underserved areas by providing access to essential technological skills and ICT education.

The Yamoransa Model aims to enrich students’ STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education through hands-on experiences. There are 10 lab centers across Ghana, each equipped with educational content, multimedia resources, and Maker Spaces for robotics. The program has shown a 13% improvement in subjects critical for tertiary education, such as mathematics, science, and ICT, in participating schools located in Bogosso, Pikki, Chuggu, and Weija Bagwe.

Professor Elsie Kaufmann, Dean of Engineering Sciences, highlighted the importance of technology in addressing unemployment in Ghana and emphasized the necessity for the country to keep pace with global technological advancements. She referenced a 2023 World Bank report indicating a need for 2.5 million additional engineers in sub-Saharan Africa to meet development challenges, underscoring the critical role of STEM education in achieving this goal.

Vincent Oppong Asamoah, Member of Parliament for Dormaa West, pledged to advocate for government support to sustain and expand the program, citing its proven benefits. He expressed confidence in convincing the Minister of Education to invest in such a vital initiative.
This year’s theme for the Yamoransa Model Impact is “Scaling the Successes of Bridging Educational Gaps with Technology,” reflecting the program’s commitment to enhancing educational opportunities through innovative technological solutions.
