President John Dramani Mahama has assured that in his tenure, Ghana will become the pharmaceutical manufacturing hub for West Africa.
He promised this while delivering his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) in parliament on Thursday, January 27, 2025, citing his previous record in government as evidence that he is capable of achieving this goal.
“My previous record in government speaks for itself, when I injected funds into Ghanaian-owned pharmaceutical companies to expand their production capacities.”
According to him, strengthening the country’s pharmaceutical industry is a must-accomplish project with the rollout of the 24-hour economy initiative.
The President believes that this measure will help curb the use of fake drugs and prevent the illicit importation of harmful drugs into the country.
“As this exciting phase unfolds under the 24-hour economy initiative, we must strengthen every aspect of our pharmaceutical industry, and this includes the Food and Drugs Authority and the Customs and Security Agencies in order to avert the use of fake drugs and the importation of illicit drugs into the country.”
