Mahama did not address the true state of the economy—Dr. Amoah

The Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso Constituency, Dr. Stephen Amoah, has asserted that President John Drama Mahama failed to address the true state of Ghana’s economy.

According to him, the President failed to acknowledge COVID 19, which was a world crisis that significantly affected Ghana’s economy; rather, he concentrated on a lot of misinformation.

Addressing the press in parliament on Thursday, February 27, Dr. Amoah highlighted the effects of COVID on Ghana’s economy, emphasizing that the President should have addressed these issues rather than projecting the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a failed government.

“The inflationary rate post-COVID was over 200%, and that was the period that our economy actually went through very turbulent times and crises. In the history of this country, we witnessed a country such as Ghana whose productivity was impaired to the extent that Ghanaians were asked to stay home but they were paid by the NPP government. These were the facts that we were expecting the president to have told all of you.”

Dr. Amoah emphasized that the economy that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) inherited in January 2025 was doing better and outperforming the economy the NPP inherited in 2016.

He therefore believes that if the President claims that the economy that was handed to him is so bad, then he should fix it, as it is the reason he has been given the mandate to lead.

Dr. Amoah stood firm on his belief that amidst the world crises that met the NPP government, they were able to fix the economy.

“We are saying that the NPP government, in spite of the economic crisis that was unprecedented since the First World War, has been able to restore the economy. We handed over a restored economy to the Mahama government.”
