Afenyo-Markin calls for inclusive fight against corruption

The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has made a compelling call for an inclusive fight against corruption, noting that the fight must extend beyond politicians to include both foreign nationals and the business class.
Speaking at the 5th Annual Constitution Day lecture in Accra today, he emphasized that the focus should not solely be on politicians but rather on all individuals involved in the corruption chain, including the business class.
Afenyo-Markin stressed that to effectively tackle corruption, it is essential to hold everyone accountable, regardless of their position or nationality.

He noted that foreigners involved in corrupt practices should also face the consequences of the law.
“When you go to Cantonment, you will see Turkish, you will see Americans, you will see British, and you will see foreign nationals mounting high-rise buildings. Is it that, if you’re a foreigner, there is nothing like a corruption tag, but if you’re a Ghanaian, you have to answer questions?
“So people then end up getting their own alter egos, hiding behind them, and saying, Oh, it is an Indian business; if that is true, then OSP will not come after me because the owner is a foreigner.”

Mr. Afenyo-Markin further stated that the laws are not just enough to deal with corruption, stressing the need for a unified effort from all Ghanaians.
“As citizens, we must never give up because giving up will lead us to a failed state, and that cannot help us as a nation. Let’s continue to crack the whip; let’s continue to be hard on the political class, but at the same time at the others in that chain of corruption.”.
