NPP Youth Protest: Nanton Constituency Party Office Locked Over Suspension of 34 Members

Youth groups within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Nanton Constituency in the Northern Region have locked the party’s constituency office in protest against the suspension of 34 party members.

The protest, which happened yesterday, March 11, followed the Constituency Chairman, Abukari Inusah’s announcement of the suspensions, which included an NPP financier, Mohammed Saha Naa.

The suspensions were imposed on members, including polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, and constituency officials, after they were accused of supporting the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) parliamentary candidate instead of the NPP’s own candidate in the 2024 elections.

Angry youth leaders have criticized the decision, saying it undermines the party’s future in the constituency.

Ibrahim Abdul Fatawu, Secretary of the Youth Coalition, condemned the move, stating, “The NPP lost both the general and parliamentary elections in Nanton. At this critical time, the party should be focused on rebuilding, uniting its members, and strategizing to recapture power in 2028. Suspending dedicated party members, especially without due process, only deepens divisions and weakens the party’s strength.”

Speaking to journalists in Nanton on Tuesday, Abdul Fatawu also accused the Constituency Executive Committee of failing to provide a fair hearing to the suspended members before taking action.

“As a democratic party that upholds the rule of law and justice, it is unacceptable to suspend party members without giving them the opportunity to defend themselves against the allegations made against them,” he said.

The youth groups also questioned the rationale behind suspending Mohammed Saha Naa, a major financial supporter of the party during the 2024 election campaign season.

“Why would the party suspend its financier, who contributed so much, both in cash and kind, during the campaign?” Fatawu asked.

They demanded the immediate revocation of the suspension letters.

“We demand that the suspension letter be revoked immediately and without further delay,” they said in a petition addressed to the National Chairman of the NPP.
