Felix Kwakye Ofosu Advocates for Legislative Reforms to Strengthen Asset Declaration Regime in Ghana

Government spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has supported calls for a reexamination of Ghana’s asset declaration regime, citing its ineffectiveness.
Speaking on TV3’s Key Point show on Saturday, May 10, Ofosu stated that the current regime lacks sufficient supervision and control, allowing individuals to provide false information without consequence.
He advocated for the inclusion of asset declaration reforms in the ongoing constitutional review process, emphasizing the need for legislation to address deficiencies and ensure effective application.
“It is not biting enough. And the way it is, you can get away with a lot, because the supervision and control, apart from the fact that they guide you to fill it, nothing else is done to check the veracity of the claim that you have made in the asset declaration.
“When you leave the office, nobody pays you to compare you to the assets as you are leaving the office.
“So there is a huge problem, and we can perhaps take advantage of the constitutional process to include it.
“We can also perhaps enact additional legislation, if there is some deficiency, to address the matter.
“So beyond the verification, there is a matter of application as well, which is the call that, you know, making over the period.
Mr. Ofosu’s comments come after some government appointees failed to meet the president’s deadline for asset declaration, resulting in a three-month salary deduction.
President John Dramani Mahama had issued a final ultimatum, warning that appointees who failed to meet the May 7, 2025, deadline would be dismissed.
Mr. Ofosu clarified that asset declaration is not limited to ministers, but also applies to all appointees, including board members.
