Akufo-Addo: 5G Should Drive Progress, Not Compromise Data Security

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on Ghanaians, particularly the youth, to embrace 5G technology with a sense of responsibility, emphasizing the need to avoid actions that could hinder the nation’s digital transformation.
The President’s remarks came during the official launch of Ghana’s high-speed 5G internet service on November 1, 2024, in Accra, led by NextGen Infraco.
Akufo-Addo highlighted that 5G technology offers tremendous potential for driving economic growth and innovation but also presents challenges, especially concerning data security and privacy.
He stressed that while 5G is a powerful catalyst for shaping Ghana’s future, it must be used wisely to prevent it from becoming a gateway for cybersecurity threats.
In his address, he stated, “The journey ahead requires vigilance and responsibility. 5G is a powerful catalyst for shaping Ghana’s future, and with its capabilities comes the responsibility to use it wisely.”
He urged all stakeholders, including users and regulators, to remain vigilant against potential digital threats, ensuring the technology contributes positively to Ghana’s development.
The President’s speech underscored the importance of addressing concerns around data privacy, cybersecurity, and the responsible use of technology. He called for a collective effort to ensure that 5G technology fosters unity and progress rather than division.
Akufo-Addo reminded the youth, who stand to benefit immensely from this digital era, that the opportunities presented by 5G must be harnessed with caution and foresight.
As Ghana moves forward in its digital transformation, the launch of the 5G service marks a significant milestone. The President’s message serves as a timely reminder of the responsibilities that come with technological advancement and the need to use these powerful tools to drive sustainable growth and development.
