Anti-LGBTQI Bill: Mahama’s decision to sign or not will depend on its contents.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has stated that his decision to sign Ghana’s controversial anti-LGBTQI bill, if passed, would depend on its content. Speaking in an interview, the 2024 presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) acknowledged the sensitivity of the issue and emphasized the need for a balanced approach that respects Ghanaian cultural values while upholding fundamental human rights.
Mahama indicated that he would carefully assess the bill’s provisions before making any commitment. “It will depend on what is in the bill. As president, it is my duty to ensure that any law I assent to aligns with the Constitution and protects the rights of all citizens,” he said.
The anti-LGBTQI bill, officially known as the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, has sparked widespread debate in Ghana and internationally. While proponents argue that it safeguards cultural and religious values, critics, including human rights organizations, warn that it could lead to discrimination and abuse of minority groups.
Mahama called for extensive consultations, urging Parliament to ensure the bill reflects the collective will of Ghanaians. He also stressed the importance of avoiding divisive rhetoric that could polarize the nation.
His comments highlight the delicate balance leaders must strike between respecting societal norms and ensuring inclusivity and fairness. As the debate continues, Mahama’s stance signals a cautious approach to a deeply contentious issue in Ghana.
