Appiah-Kubi claims Ken Ofori-Atta held greater power than Akufo-Addo.

Dr. Appiah-Kubi, a Member of Parliament for Asante-Akim North, has alleged that Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta wielded more power than President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo within the current government. Speaking during a recent interview, Appiah-Kubi, who has been a vocal critic of Ofori-Atta’s performance, argued that the Finance Minister’s influence and autonomy in managing national affairs were unparalleled, even surpassing that of the President.
According to him, Ofori-Atta’s ability to make major economic decisions without significant checks or opposition from the President underscores his dominance in the administration. Appiah-Kubi cited the Finance Minister’s role in critical policies, including the controversial Domestic Debt Exchange Programme and the ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as evidence of his outsized authority.
He further lamented that this concentration of power undermines effective governance and accountability, suggesting that the President’s perceived leniency towards Ofori-Atta has eroded public confidence in the government. Appiah-Kubi also reiterated calls for the Finance Minister’s dismissal, stating that his leadership has contributed to Ghana’s current economic challenges.
This is not the first time concerns have been raised about Ofori-Atta’s influence in government. Critics argue that his close relationship with the President, as a relative and long-time ally, has shielded him from accountability despite widespread dissatisfaction with his management of the economy. The allegations have fueled ongoing debates about governance, power dynamics, and the state of leadership in Ghana.
