Chaos Breaks Out in Parliament of Ghana Over Vetting of Ablakwa

There was chaos in Ghana’s Parliament, Thursday night due to a heated dispute over the vetting of Ministers-designate, specifically regarding the vetting of Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Tempers were high to the point where police had to step in to restore calm, and the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga had to intervene and direct that proceedings be suspended for the day.

This came after clashes between Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the Appointments Committee of Parliament.

The confusion started because while the Majority insisted on proceeding with the vetting session beyond 10 PM, the Minority strongly opposed the move, declaring that they were done with vetting for the day.

The fracas resulted in the damage of tables, chairs, and microphones in the conference room, where the vetting of President John Mahama’s ministerial appointees has been ongoing for about three weeks now.
