Cholera Deaths: Mohammed Awal calls on government to act

The executive director of the Northern Sector Action on Awareness Centre (NORSAAC), Mohammed Awal, has advised the government to take the lead in providing uninterrupted resources to the Ghana Health Service to enable them to address the rising cholera-related deaths in the country.

On Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Mr. Awal, in an interview with Joy News, advised that the government should engage with international funding organizations like the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and even the World Bank to secure vital support and resources.

Given the country’s current economic challenges, Mr. Awal emphasized the need to seek support from other donors, as Ghana’s present financial situation renders it unable to single-handedly address the issue at this time.

“Let’s admit that it will be challenging for the government to fill this gap at the moment. We will have to engage other donors to ensure that we have uninterrupted vaccination services going on,” he said.

He also advocated for the organization of nationwide campaigns aimed at sensitizing the public on the importance of practicing good hygiene and sanitation, thereby reducing the incidence of cholera-related fatalities resulting from environmental health breakdowns.

“There is the need for campaign to mobilize citizens to behave well and to conduct themselves in ways that would help us reduce these unnecessary deaths.”
