CJ’s Removal: Dr. Zaato Discredits Adenta Kumi’s Petition Against Investigating Committee

A political science lecturer at the University of Ghana-Legon and a member of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, has vowed not to trust the content of a recent petition presented by Alfred Ababio Kumi, which seeks to dissolve the committee investigating the three petitions for the removal of the Chief Justice (CJ).

Dr. Zaato, who was speaking during the Newday live show on TV3 on Wednesday, May 21, stated clearly that Lawyer Thaddeus Sory has so much credibility that it will now allow him to engage in such actions.

“The petition has mentioned three names. I know two of them, and I have known Thaddeus Sory for about 25 years. He has built his credibility and will not involve himself in this allegation at all. I will be a doubting Thomas in this case, and unless there is credible evidence to prove these allegations, I will choose to be a doubting Thomas.”

President John Dramani Mahama constituted a five-member committee to probe into three separate petitions that seek to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo from office after a prima facie case was established against her. The president also suspended her from her duties as the chief justice pending the conclusion of the investigations.

This move by the President has been met with mixed reactions from Ghanaians and faced a series of petitions and court actions, particularly from sympathizers of the opposition NPP, all seeking to abort the CJ’s removal process.

It is in this line that a one-time NPP parliamentary aspirant for the Adenta Constituency, Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, also presented a petition to the president seeking to dissolve the probing committee, citing allegations that two of the committee members were seen with the lawyer for one of the petitioners, Thaddeus Sory, having dinner at a popular restaurant in Accra, where they were overheard by people discussing matters in the petition.

In responding to the allegations on the TV3 morning show, Dr. Zaato strongly defended the credibility of Lawyer Thaddeus Sory, whose name was mentioned as the one who had the meeting with the two committee members.

Dr. Zaato stated that Thaddeus Sory will never descend so low as to engage in such actions.

Meanwhile, Lawyer Thaddeus Sory has also responded to the allegations on his Facebook page, stating that the allegations are lies and that no such meetings had ever taken place.

But Mr. Solomon Owusu, a senior member of the movement for change, wants the matter to be thoroughly investigated, especially the last part of Thaddeus Sory’s response, which states that they know people who get justice through negotiations.

Global InfoAnalytics has also released a survey that demonstrates that about 53% of Ghanaians are in support of the actions taken by the President in suspending the Chief Justice.
