The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has disqualified Philip Appiah Kubi, the new flagbearer for the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), after discovering errors and illegalities on his nomination form. This announcement was made by EC Chair Jean Mensa during a press conference on Tuesday, November 12.
Although the EC allowed the party to address some discrepancies, Jean Mensa indicated that certain irregularities were too significant to ignore, resulting in Kubi’s disqualification from the upcoming election.
The GFP faced a significant challenge following the passing of its founding leader and original flagbearer, Akua Donkor. Her unexpected death on October 15 forced the party to quickly find a replacement for the December 2024 presidential election. The EC provided the GFP with a 10-day period to nominate a new flagbearer, which led to Kubi’s selection.

However, upon further examination, the EC found multiple issues with Kubi’s nomination documentation that extended beyond mere clerical mistakes. Jean Mensa clarified that while the party managed to rectify some errors, other aspects were classified as “illegitimate” and could not be accepted according to electoral laws.
Mensa reiterated that the EC’s responsibility to maintain the integrity of the electoral process prohibits the acceptance of any irregularities, regardless of the efforts made by the party to amend them.
