ECOWAS at 50: H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray Unveils $340 Million Off-Grid Electricity Initiative for West Africa

President of the ECOWAS Commission, His Excellency Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, has announced a groundbreaking $340 million off-grid electricity project that will help enhance energy access across West Africa.
Speaking at ECOWAS’s 50th anniversary celebration in Accra on Tuesday, April 22, Dr. Touray said that this initiative is not just about providing energy but also about creating new opportunities for businesses and empowering communities.
“Equa’s intervention in the energy sector is not only about light but also about creating opportunities for business and empowering communities,” he stated.

Dr. Touray added that the off-grid project will address the infrastructure deficits faced by many West African nations.
“Equally important to energy access is the need for a solid framework that can unlock trade and investment opportunities,” he added.
Additionally, Dr. Touray’s announcement of this off grid electricity project marks a significant milestone for ECOWAS as it continues its push for sustainable development across West Africa
“We must continue to invest in our infrastructure, our security, and, most importantly, in the people of West Africa,” he added.

The project is part of a wider effort by the Equa Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, which has been instrumental in launching similar initiatives aimed at digital integration, vocational education, and climate-smart agriculture in the region.
