Fire Incidents Increasing in Ghana: A Notice for Alertness and Action

From January to October 2024, Ghana witnessed a significant rise in fire incidents, totaling 658 compared to 569 during the same timeframe in 2023. This concerning pattern has raised alarms regarding public safety and the efficiency of the nation’s firefighting operations.
During the unveiling of the 2024/2025 Bushfire Prevention Initiative, Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Julius Kuunuor linked the rise in fire incidents to human carelessness. He pointed out that with enhanced public awareness and caution, many of these fires could be avoided, urging individuals to remain alert and take charge of their environments.
Significant Fire Events and Obstacles
Ghana has endured severe fire incidents throughout the years, impacting both home and business structures. One of the most recent and destructive fires took place on November 14, 2024, in Circle, Accra, resulting in the destruction of hundreds of buildings, displacing residents, and inflicting extensive damage.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) continues to grapple with major hurdles, such as insufficient firefighting apparatus, unreliable fire hydrants, and a lack of adequate fire tenders. These challenges have resulted in delayed response times and an inability to control fires swiftly, exacerbating the extent of the destruction.

The Significance of Public Awareness

CFO Kuunuor highlighted the critical role of public education and accountability in curbing fire incidents. He cautioned against reckless behaviors like tossing away cigarettes, improperly storing flammable items, and using fire unsupervised in high-risk zones. “A minor spark can result in disastrous fires,” he stated, encouraging everyone to contribute to prevention efforts.
Government Initiatives to Enhance Firefighting Capabilities

To tackle these challenges, the government has initiated measures to improve firefighting infrastructure. Recent contributions of 19 new pickup vehicles and four command vehicles to the GNFS aim to enhance response efficiency and equip firefighting units better, especially for bushfire situations.
Minister for the Interior Henry Quartey also underscored the necessity for public collaboration, declaring, “The Fire Service is prepared, but we require the assistance of every citizen to lessen the dangers.” He advocated for a partnership between the public and firefighting services to avert fires and diminish their catastrophic effects.
Prevention as a Key Focus
The 2024/2025 Bushfire Prevention Initiative emphasizes public education, bolstering fire safety measures, and modernizing firefighting tools. By promoting cooperation among citizens, local governments, and the GNFS, Ghana can strive to decrease fire incidents and foster safer communities.
With ongoing dedication to prevention and public involvement, Ghana can lessen the threats of fire outbreaks and protect its citizens and assets.
