GJA Reiterates Call for Justice in Ahmed Suale’s Murder Case

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has reiterated the association’s commitment to seeking justice for slain investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, and other journalists who have been assaulted while on duty.
In a news briefing at the Ghana International Conference Centre on February 18, Mr. Dwumfour indicated that the GJA stands ready to bring the cases of Ahmed Suale and Latif Iddrisu before the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice if the Ghana Police Service fails to show appreciable concern by the end of March 2025.
“We served notice that if by the end of March 2025, the Ghana Police Service has not come out with something concrete on the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of suspects in the murder case, we shall proceed to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice,” he stated.
The GJA President further revealed that international bodies, including the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), are ready to take the case to higher international platforms.
The GJA President denounced the rising tide of assaults on journalists, with seven reported in 50 days into the new administration of President John Dramani Mahama. He cited particular cases, including the attack on Joy News’ Ohemeng Tawiah and Erastus Asare Donkor by illegal miners and the savage assault on six journalists in Kumasi and Walewale in February alone.

Mr. Dwumfour was critical of journalists’ security and the failure to arrest and prosecute, saying such impunity is propelling Ghana into lawlessness.
“If REGSEC cannot provide security in its own backyard, how can it provide security elsewhere?” he asked regarding the attack on four journalists who were reporting on the Ashanti Region Council of State election at the Regional Coordinating Council.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has assured the GJA of its full commitment to ensuring justice for the assaulted journalists.
