GNAT Demands Prosecution of Student Who Stabbed Teacher in the Eye

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has issued a stern ultimatum to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ghana Police Service, demanding swift action within three days to prosecute a student who stabbed a teacher in the left eye at Asuoso Senior High School in Offinso. Failure to act may result in nationwide industrial action by teachers starting next week, according to GNAT General Secretary, Thomas Musah Tanko.

The incident occurred on November 8, when the teacher instructed a loitering student to return to the classroom. The student responded violently, stabbing the teacher, who has since lost his left eye. Despite the severity of the attack, the GES and Police Service have yet to take meaningful action. This inaction has sparked outrage among teachers, with GNAT emphasizing the need for justice and support for the injured educator.

Thomas Tanko criticized the lack of response, questioning who would bear the cost of the teacher’s medical bills and highlighting the lifelong impact of the injury. He warned that the teaching fraternity would not tolerate such neglect, stating, “Teachers are not animals… What has happened is unacceptable, and we shall react in a way that will shock the nation.”

GNAT has called for immediate prosecution of the student involved and adequate compensation for the victim. Tanko stressed that the matter is being closely monitored at the national level and urged regional directors to act swiftly to prevent further escalation. He also hinted at the possibility of withdrawing teaching services if authorities fail to deliver justice.

The association reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice and protecting the dignity of teachers, vowing to hold duty bearers accountable for their response to the incident.
