GNFS Readies Plans to Combat Intentional Fire Outbreaks

The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Desmond Ackah (DO II), has disclosed that GNFS has put plans together to tackle fire outbreaks that are deliberately caused by certain individuals.

In an interview with Joy News on Friday, April 18, Mr. Ackah emphasized that the plans are designed to heighten vigilance and effectively address deliberate attempts to trigger fire outbreaks in marketplaces.

“We have deployed our taskforce into these markets, especially during the night period where there is virtually no light in the market so as to be able to calm down on all of these things.”

He advised the provision of modern technology like CCTV cameras for extra vigilance and safety

He mentioned that GNFS has teamed up with managers of modernized markets and has created enough exits to be able to save lives when there is an outbreak.

“You’ll agree with me that our main markets is where we have the bigger challenge, whereby those markets are heavily congested therefore, they have issue with exits and widened alleys and escapes.”

Mr. Ackah advised that traders avoid blocking fire hydrants with their structures so that together the issue of fire outbreaks in the market will be solved

“The challenge is that we have the traders blocking these hydrants with their structures. Quite recently we had to move into the Techiman market to dig out a fire hydrant in one of shops and that is the challenge that we are having.”

He assured that most of the GNFS’s broken equipment has been repaired and is now ready for deployment during emergencies. Additionally, they are awaiting the distribution of new equipment to strategic locations, which will further enhance their response capabilities.

He encouraged Ghanaians to allow fire service personnel to conduct safety checks in their homes to identify potential fire hazards and ensure a safer environment
