Haruna Idrissu Opposes LGBTQ+

The Minister-Designate for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has stated his opposition to LQBTQ+, citing that it contradicts his personal values and ethical principles as a Muslim and the Muslim community.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee in Parliament on January 20, 2025, the Tamale South MP expained that LQBTQ+ is not aligned with the values and traditions that Ghanaians were raised with, and therefore he does not expect any Ghanaian parent to deviate from these cultural norms when raising their children.

“You know where I stand on this matter. It is pertinent to my Muslim values and ethics. I do not want to believe that many Ghanaian parents would want their children trained in a way that is not consistent with the way me and you were brought up as Ghanaians.”

Haruna Idrissu emphasized the importance of upholding the country’s social and cultural values while stressing the need to remember the constitutional obligations, particularly those pertaining to the core values that define our nation.

“We have a constitutional obligation to uphold Ghana’s core values, which are rooted in our collective morality. This is reflected in our constitution, where phrases like’subject to public morality’ are used. But whose morality are we talking about? Ours is a nation built on Ghanaian values, defined by our unique cultural, religious, and traditional heritage.” he stated

This comes after President John Dramani Mahama indicated a preference for promoting family values through education rather than prioritising legislation.
