The Deputy Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Caroline Reindorf Amissah, has assured that her service is following the cases of Mpox that have been recorded in Ghana.
In an interview on the AM Show on Joy News on Monday, May 19, Dr. Amissah emphasized that the Ghana Health Service has been conducting contact tracing for the four confirmed cases to determine if their contacts have also contracted Mpox.
“For the cases that we have gotten, we are following them up. We know where they live, we know who they live with, we are following up these persons to see if they will develop any of the symptoms that we have talked about.”
She noted that while the symptoms of Mpox, such as rashes, fever, headache, and muscle pains, are common to many other illnesses, they should not be dismissed or taken lightly.

Dr. Amissah advised individuals to be vigilant for these symptoms and to promptly seek medical attention at the nearest health facility if they experience any of them.
She clarified that the symptoms do not follow a particular order, as they differ among individuals, emphasizing that the rashes should be a signal to any individual to visit the nearest health center.
“I believe they may all come following the other, not in a particular order. You could develop a headache, you could have a fever, you could feel body aches or pains but as they all come together and especially when you see the rash, I think that should quickly set your mind to it”
She advised that individuals heighten their hand hygiene by regularly washing with soap, water, and sanitizers so as to protect each other from contracting Mpox.

Mpox is a viral disease that spreads through close contact with infected individuals, animals, or contaminated materials.
Typical symptoms include a characteristic rash, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes.
On May 15, 2025, the Ghana Health Service confirmed the country’s first two Mpox cases in the Accra Metropolis.
Two additional cases have been confirmed as of Saturday, totaling four cases in the country, three in the Greater Accra Region and one in the Western Region.
GHS has assured containment of these individuals but advises everyone to protect themselves to avoid spread of the pox.
