Ndan Ya-Naa Abukari II has called on the government to rename the Tamale International Airport to Gbewaa International Airport.
According to Ndan Ya Naa, the proposed name was reached in consultation with the King of Mamprugu, Nayiri Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga, and the Regent of Bimbilla, Nyelinbolgu Naa Yakubu Andani Dasana II-the other Mole-Dagomba Kings.
The call of the three traditional leaders comes after the erstwhile Nana Akufo-Addo government renamed the airport after the late Tolon Naa Yakubu Tali last year, against the advice of the Dagbon King.
Ndan Ya-Naa said the renaming of the airport will enable the people it serves to appreciate it.
“Such a huge investment needs to be appreciated by the people that it serves, and in consultation with the Nayiri and the Bimbilla Gbanglana, we want the airport to be renamed the Gbewaa International Airport,” he said.

Ndan Ya-Naa Abukari II spoke through his spokesperson, Zangbalung Naa Jacob Mahama, when President John Mahama paid a courtesy call on him at the Gbewaa Palace as part of the ‘Thank You’ tour of the Northern Region on Saturday.
Ndan Ya-Naa bemoaned what he said seemed to be the abandonment of construction works at the airport, appealing to the President to see to the completion of phase three of the airport, which includes a hajj terminal.
This, he added, will enable the airport to serve the people better.
“The phase three of the project that included a Hajj terminal seems to have been abandoned. We want to entreat you to start phase three of the project so that the airport can handle all that it was intended to do,” Ndan Ya-Naa appealed.

President John Mahama assured the Dagbon King that the Transport Minister, who is also the MP for Saboba in the Northern Region, will work to ensure phase three of the airport starts.
He commended the people of Dagbon for their support during December’s general election, promising that the region will have its share of the national cake.
