NDC Alleges NPP of Plotting to Rig the 2024 Election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has recently made serious allegations regarding the 2024 elections, accusing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of attempting to rig the outcome through various schemes. These allegations were primarily focused on Brigadier General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces. Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s National Communications Director, claimed that Opoku had been involved in orchestrating an election rigging operation, particularly in the Ashanti region. The NDC’s allegations are centered on the use of ballot stuffing, swapping of ballot boxes, and military involvement in election manipulation
One key point raised was the NDC’s assertion that Opoku was promoted to his current military position in part because of his role in the violence during the 2021 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election. They argue that the promotion was a reward for his involvement in electoral violence, which has been widely criticized, especially given the findings of the Emil Short Commission that investigated the incident

In addition to these claims, the NDC alleges that Opoku is using military resources, including a training camp at Asutuare, to prepare NPP supporters for violent actions on election day. The party also points to an alleged stockpile of weapons and election materials in Kumasi, which they claim is part of the rigging plot
However, the NDC’s allegations have been met with skepticism, especially due to the lack of concrete evidence provided. In response to questions about the absence of proof, Gyamfi referred to the past behavior of the accused figures, including the violent tactics employed during the 2021 by-election, to support the allegations
The broader implications of these accusations could be significant for Ghana’s election integrity. Similar allegations have surfaced in past elections, but no substantial evidence has been presented to conclusively prove any widespread manipulation. The NDC’s claims could potentially affect public trust in the electoral process, especially if the accusations are not substantiated in the coming months
As the 2024 elections draw closer, these allegations are likely to continue shaping the political discourse. The NDC has stated its intention to bring these matters to the attention of various authorities, including the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in the hopes of ensuring a peaceful and transparent election process
