NDC Sowutuom Organiser sentenced to 4 years imprisonment for threatening to kill, inciting violence

An organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Sowutuom has been sentenced to four years imprisonment for threatening to kill and inciting violence. The sentencing follows his conviction on charges related to inflammatory comments made during a political rally earlier this year.
The accused, whose name has been withheld for security reasons, was found guilty of issuing death threats and encouraging violent actions against political opponents. According to the prosecution, his remarks were recorded and widely circulated on social media, sparking public outrage and concerns over political intolerance.
During the trial, the court heard that the organizer had shown no remorse for his actions, which the judge described as a blatant disregard for Ghana’s democratic principles and the rule of law. In delivering the sentence, the judge emphasized the need to deter such behavior, especially as the country approaches the critical 2024 general elections.
The NDC has since distanced itself from the convicted organizer, reiterating its commitment to peaceful campaigns and responsible political discourse. In a statement, the party condemned any form of violence and urged its members to uphold the highest standards of conduct.
This ruling serves as a strong warning against inflammatory political rhetoric and underscores the importance of fostering peaceful coexistence in Ghana’s vibrant democracy. Security agencies have vowed to crack down on similar offenses to ensure a safe and fair election environment.
