Meningitis cases in the Upper East Region have not reached an outbreak stage in 2025.

This is according to Dr. Samuel Boakye-Boateng, the Regional Director of Health Services.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, in Bolgatanga, Dr. Boakye-Boateng addressed the region’s preparedness and response measures after outbreaks in other parts of the country.

He noted that while the Upper East Region has been spared a meningitis outbreak, neighboring Upper West Region has recorded 196 suspected cases, with 34 confirmed and 17 deaths between January 1 and March 2, 2025.

He explained that for cases recorded to be described as an outbreak, there has to be at least 10 confirmed cases. However, in the Upper East Region, there have been 31 suspected cases, with 2 confirmed, resulting in 2 deaths so far in 2025.

“Let me put on the record that the Upper East Region has NOT recorded Meningitis outbreak in 2025”, he said.

Dr. Boakye-Boateng outlined the measures being implemented to safeguard public health.

He said the Regional Rapid Response Team (RRT) and District Public Health Emergency Management Committees (PHEMCs) have convened to discuss preparedness and response plans.

“Health facilities are on high alert, with intensified disease surveillance to detect and report cases early”, he stated.

On Risk Communication and Community Engagement, the Regional Director of Health Services indicated that community engagement activities have been intensified to educate residents on symptoms, prevention, and the importance of early treatment.

“Hospitals are equipped to conduct gram staining, and the Navrongo Health Research Center Laboratory performs PCR for confirmation of suspected cases. Essential medicines are being stocked at health facilities”, he revealed

The public is urged to remain calm, vigilant, and adhere to public health guidelines, reporting any suspected cases of meningitis or cholera to the nearest health facility.
