Prez. Mahama Launches Feed Ghana Program, targets 50 farmers, 55,000 households to produce 1 million birds annually

President John Dramani Mahama has launched the flagship “Feed Ghana Program” in Techiman on Saturday, April 12, emphasizing the need for Ghana to move beyond importing chicken to producing it domestically.

Ghana imports almost $400 million worth of chicken every year, a situation President Mahama described as unfortunate.

To address this, President Mahama said his government plans to support 50 anchor farmers in producing four million birds, equivalent to 10,000 metric tonnes of chicken, under the Nkokonketsetse program.

“This year, we are going to register and support 50 anchor farmers to produce four million birds equivalent to 10,000 metric tonnes of chicken to support the Nkokonketsetse program.”

Additionally, he said, “55,000 households across the country will be registered, with each household expected to provide 500 birds annually.”

He stressed that the Feed Ghana program aims to produce over one million birds, increasing women’s income and improving children’s nutrition.

The Nkokonketsetse program seeks to enable the poultry sector to meet the country’s consumption demands, reducing reliance on imports.

By promoting domestic production, the program aims to stimulate economic growth and development.

The initiative is expected to increase income levels, particularly for women, and enhance food security.

“Our poultry farm-to-table project, popularly known as the Nkokonketsetse program, which is going to be implemented in collaboration with the poultry farmers association, will support factories, feed mills, veterinary services, and poultry processing centers.”

The Feed Ghana Program is a key initiative to boost domestic food production and reduce reliance on imports.
