Redeem your pledge to the media – GJA to Prez. Mahama

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to redeem his pledge to promote the interests of the media.
The GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, made this call on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at a news conference held at the Ghana International Press Centre in Accra.
According to him, President Mahama promised that he had never supported the privatization of the state-owned media or the assault of journalists, and so he promised the GJA that during his tenure, he would uphold the interests of the media.

This call was made when the GJA addressed several cases of assaults of media practitioners in the country, including the cases of Ohemeng Tawia and Multimedia’s Erastus Asare Donkor.
Noting that those responsible have yet to face justice, the GJA deemed it important to remind the President of his earlier commitment, urging him to take action and ensure that the individuals behind the assaults are apprehended and held accountable.
“We appeal to President Mahama to take a personal interest in them and ensure that the perpetrators are arrested, arraigned, and punished for their crimes,” he said.
The GJA believes that “actions speak louder than words” and expects the President to act promptly.
