Several Students Injured As Tensions Escalate Between Bawku SHS and SHTS During Peace Ritual

A peace ritual organized by traditional leaders in the Kpalwega suburb aimed at curbing longstanding violent confrontations between students of the Bawku Senior High School (SHS) and Bawku Technical Institute (BTI) in the Upper East Region ended in chaos on Tuesday afternoon.
The ceremony, which sought to promote unity, was disrupted when students from both institutions clashed, resulting in throwdowns and the exchange of stones.

Videos circulating on social media show the students in their uniforms, pelting each other with stones and running helter-skelter on the streets.
Reports indicate that several students sustained serious injuries during the altercation.
Military personnel swiftly intervened, restoring order and ensuring the safety of the surrounding community.

The rivalry between the two schools, situated on opposite sides of the main road leading into Bawku, has a tumultuous history, with numerous incidents of violence reported over the years.
This latest outbreak underscores the deep-seated tensions that have persisted despite attempts by community leaders to foster peace.
The police are expected to investigate the incident further, and calls for renewed strategies to address the rivalry and promote dialogue among students are likely to emerge in the wake of Tueday’s events.
