Speaker Alban Bagbin declares 4 Parliamentary seats vacant – What next?

Four parliamentary seats are legally vacant, according to Speaker of the House Alban Sumana Bagbin, just two months before the December election.

According to this verdict, the majority side, which was supported by Independent Member of Parliament Andrew Amoako Asiamah, will now lean toward the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), giving the ruling New Patriotic Party a tiny advantage in Ghana’s hung parliament.

Kojo Asante, the NPP MP for Suhum in the Eastern Region, Andrew Amoakoh Asiamah of Fomena in the Ashanti Region, Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah of the NDC’s Amenfi Central district in the Western Region, and Cynthia Morrison of the NPP’s Agona West constituency are among the lawmakers impacted by the decision.

After a lengthy reading, the Speaker declared in his decision on Thursday, October 17, that if Article 97 (1)(g) of the 1992 Constitution was only to apply to a future parliament, then it would not have been necessary for it to exist because the concerned MPs would have served out the current parliament’s term.
