Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has asserted that the Executive and Judiciary are eroding Parliament’s power.
The Speaker expressed grave concerns about what he called escalating power struggles between the two branches of government and intervention.
He claimed that recent measures by the executive and judiciary clearly questioned the authority and jurisdiction of Parliament, which he referred to as the “repository of the sovereign will of the people of Ghana.”

The essence, jurisdiction, authority, powers, and operation of the prestigious institution of Parliament—which is the storehouse of the sovereign will of the Ghanaian people—are directly threatened by recent actions of the judiciary and the government.

“It is becoming more and more obvious that the executive and judicial arms appear to be working together to undermine Parliament,” he stated.
Mr. Bagbin said during a press conference on Wednesday that recent acts by these arms pose a threat to undermine the institution of Parliament and destabilize Ghana’s democraticy.
Mr. Bagbin emphasized that the nation’s constitutional order might be upset if these events are allowed to continue unchecked. “Our democracy and the authority of Parliament may be threatened by the current commotion, which can be compared to a power play between the branches of government,” Bagbin said.
His speech came after the Supreme Court recently took a position on the four parliamentary seats he had first declared empty, which he believes has consequences for the power of Parliament.

In his analysis of the 2020 elections, Mr. Bagbin contended that a hung Parliament was the outcome of Ghanaian voters’ rejection of a majoritarian, winner-take-all system in favor of a more balanced one.
He said the balance was meant to advance national interests over partisan or personal goals, and that voters want “inclusivity, collaboration, and consensus building.”
