The Speaker of Parliament has postponed the discussion regarding the petition aimed at declaring the seats of four Members of Parliament as vacant.
This decision was made after listening to the arguments presented by both the Majority and Minority factions of the House concerning the petition initiated by former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu.
This development follows Haruna Iddrisu’s effort to invoke Article 97 (1)(g) of the Constitution, which seeks to vacate the seats of three Majority MPs and one NDC MP.
The regulation specifies that a Parliament member must resign their seat if they break away from the party that elected them or if they aim to function as an independent in Parliament.

After a vigorous debate on the floor on Tuesday, Speaker Bagbin requested an additional two days to provide a reasoned and thoughtful ruling.
He also confirmed that he had received the notice of petition submitted by Haruna Iddrisu.
“So please, kindly allow me these two days, and I will return with a comprehensive ruling. I will present it to all of you, ensuring that at the end of the day, justice is not only served but is visibly seen to be served in this matter,” he stated.
Earlier today, the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, lodged an injunction application at the Supreme Court in response to the Minority’s attempts to declare the seats of Independent candidates as vacant.
However, the Speaker informed the House that “I have not yet been served with the process, so this matter is still not before me.”
Mr. Afenyo-Markin sought to request permission to submit his suit as the Speaker concluded his decision.
The Speaker dismissed this request, labeling it as an abuse of process.
“I refuse to grant you the leave,” he informed the Majority Leader.
