The Public Relations and Communication Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWLC), Stanley Martey, has maintained that tap water stands out as the best option for drinking, exceeding all other packaged water alternatives.
Speaking in an interview with Joynews and monitored by Xtrememediaonline on Monday, February 24, Mr. Martey revealed the GWCL’s continuous production process ensures that water is always freshly supplied, unlike packaged water, which typically undergoes prolonged storage before consumption.
“Tap water benchmarked with other packaged water; tap water is always the best. The water that flows is always fresh. If you fetch water directly from the tap, it means that it is fresh because production it 24/7, nonstop. We don’t store the water before serving people.”

He emphasized that packaged water, especially sachet water, is not safe to drink, noting that the production process, the plastics that store the water, and its exposure to the sun contaminate the water and make it unsafe to drink.
“The worst is the sachet water because even the production process, I can’t vouch for. The plastics that are used when it comes into contact with the sun have some emissions that contaminate the water.
Mr. Martey cited research by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), noting that every annual survey on water reveals that tap water is the best.
Refuting the assertions of some individuals that the cloudiness of tap water is a result of harmful chemicals, Mr. Martey clarified that the cloudy appearance is a positive outcome resulting from post-chlorination, which is safe.
“Sometimes we are able to smell the scent of chlorine. It’s as a result of the post-chlorination that we do within the system so there’s no problem to that effect.”

He therefore urged Ghanaians to drink straight from the tap rather than packaged water, which, through unsafe production processes and exposure to the sun, could cause harm to the human body.
He further advised the public to report any instances of illegal water connections, as these connections can lead to water contamination.
“We also urge everybody that if somebody is doing an illegal connection, don’t assume that you are not affected. You are affected in one way or another. You can call the nearest Ghana Water Company Limited and ensure that that is not done.”
