STEM will be integrated at all levels of education—Murtala Mohammed

The minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, has promised that, together with other ministries, he will integrate the study of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at all levels of education in Ghana.

According to him, this would enable every individual to possess basic knowledge in these areas, which is a critical factor in promoting economic growth and national development.

In a one-on-one interview with Joy News on Monday, February 10, 2025, the minister emphasized that Ghana can make significant financial savings by stopping the importation of engineering tools, such as spanners and knots, which can be manufactured locally. This, to him, would enable the country to position itself competitively on the global stage.

“If for nothing at all, basic things that we spend a lot of money importing as a state, if we are able to advance in our technological goal, we may be able to avoid some of those things. We still import spanners and knots, but we have the capacity to do that,” he said.

He therefore promised that, in addition to those fully enrolled in the STEM program, he would make sure all students across all disciplines have a basic understanding of STEM.

Hon. Murtala further assured that the Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology is nearing completion of a retooling project, with about 95% of the work done. Once finished, this initiative is expected to yield financial savings for the country as we would discontinue the importation of such tools.

“The Ministry is having a project: a retooling center and the foundries sector, where we develop those things. It is about 95% complete. We need about GHS 249,000,000.00 to be able to complete it.”
