Suspension of MPs Illegal and Autocratic – Haruna Mohammed

The deputy general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has asserted that the suspension of the four members of parliament by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, was illegal and autocratic.

According to him, the suspension was not built on any constitutional value, and so to him it was an autocratic decision rather than standing orders by parliament.

In an interview with Joy News on Wednesday, February 5, the deputy general secretary emphasized that the speaker should have consulted members of both the majority and minority in parliament before taking that decision.

Citing the subsequent lifting of the suspension of these four MPs, Haruna argued that the reversal of the suspension was unwarranted, as the initial suspension itself was illegitimate.

“I think that first of all the suspension was an illegality, so the speaker should not have lifted the suspension because it was happening on illegal stance.”
