The Former President’s Approval Of Bawumia Has Created A ‘Big Blot’ On His Political Career – Alan Kyerematen

Alan Kyerematen, the leader of the Movement for Change, has stated that former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s endorsement of NPP candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has tarnished his political reputation.

In an interview with Oyerepa TV on November 18, Kyerematen, who served as a minister during Kufuor’s presidency, expressed that the respected statesman should refrain from endorsing candidates.

Kyerematen explained that Kufuor’s actions have led to disrespect from political supporters, despite his notable career. He remarked, “What he has done has created a significant blemish on his political legacy. Look at how people are speaking against him and showing him disrespect. For someone with such a distinguished career, it’s surprising to see him involved in such matters, leading to widespread criticism.”

He urged Kufuor to avoid making similar comments in the future, adding, “I can’t disrespect him; he is like an uncle to me. His actions are not appropriate, and he should stop. Only he knows the reasons behind his statements.”

On November 17, Kufuor had expressed confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s ability to lead the country, stating that Ghana’s economy would improve if he were elected in the upcoming general elections. Kufuor highlighted Bawumia’s significant contributions to the Bank of Ghana during his tenure, which helped revive the currency.

Meanwhile, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, a spokesperson for former President John Dramani Mahama, asserted that Kufuor has an obligation to support his party and campaign for Bawumia. He emphasized that Kufuor’s statements do not guarantee that Ghanaians will vote for the NPP, stating, “President Kufuor, as a true Danquah-Busia man, is obligated to defend his party and its candidate. However, that doesn’t mean the electorate accepts his views. The NPP has been ineffective in government and should be voted out!”
