There should be a national dialogue on taxation – Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare

The Minister-Designate for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare, has suggested that there should be a national dialogue on taxation, considering the current exorbitant tax rates.
She said this during the vetting of ministerial nominees on January 22, 2025. The nominee believes that when taxes are reasonable, people are more likely to pay them. However, it becomes burdensome when tax rates exceed expectations, making individuals more inclined to evade taxes.
“I’m not an economist, but I know that when we are charged reasonable prices, people pay. Not everybody is interested in evading tax, but if it becomes burdensome, then there is the attractiveness to evade it,” she stated.

Hon. Elizabeh Ofosu Adjare reiterated that if a national dialogue on taxation is considered, people will pay their taxes willingly, and this will help solve the problem of tax evasion so that people can declare exactly what they are importing and pay their corresponding taxes.
She believes that solving this issue of underdeclaration of goods at the port does not only depend on the law-enforcing agencies but also the Ministry of Finance.
