UDS Lecturer, Dr. Fiter Advocates for Cut-Off Point Entry for Senior High Schools

An assistant lecturer at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Dr. Seidu Fiter, is advocating for a cut-off point entry for senior high schools to ensure that only brilliant and ready students are admitted.

This, he believes, will improve the quality of students entering the universities and the job market.

In an interview with the media on Friday, March 21, 2025, Dr. Fiter revealed that currently, beneficiary students joining universities are underperforming, noting that some have even faced dismissal due to poor performance, as seen in the case of the University of Education, Winneba.

“And when we conduct this examination, the majority of them fail the exam. And even only a few for you to pick. And we have already made this point clearly. The important thing we must do is to cut off points. Because there are students who go by resource, aggregate six people. That can qualify you to read medicine.”

The lecturer explained that the Free Senior High School was poorly implemented, resulting in the numerous challenges facing the policy.

He said to address these challenges confronting the successful implementation of the Free Senior High School policy, he proposed a more targeted approach to the policy, focusing on brilliant but needy students.

He suggests that affluent parents should be required to pay for their children’s education, while needy students receive support.

“Today, you would have a man who can pay even if students are supposed to pay $1,000 at a senior high school.

“The person can pay. But the person is not paying, just like me. Who is supposed to be? Who is your person in court? Then there’s no equity.
