Vice-President’s UK Medical Trip Exposes NDC’s Dishonesty – Haruna Mohammed

The Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, has criticized the NDC for hypocrisy regarding Ghana’s healthcare system.

Mr. Mohammed’s comments come after Vice-President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang sought medical care in the UK, despite initial treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC).

Mr. Mohammed alleged that the NDC was being dishonest, pointing out that while they claimed UGMC was established to reduce the need for public officials to seek medical care abroad, the reality has been contrary to this assertion.

“They are not honest. And that is why God has brought us to where we are today. His Excellency the President today told us that the University of Ghana Medical Center was established to stop public officers from traveling abroad for health care. And today, that particular facility did not vanish. That facility is there.

Speaking on Joynews on Monday, March 31, Mr. Mohammed insisted that having the facilities alone does not guarantee that a country can solely deal with medical issues, therefore NDC’s claim that the UGMC would bridge that gap and prevent further medical care outside was entirely false.

“You can have the best facility, but you may need something and it requires an expert, which you don’t have.

“That is why one Johannes Wendell says, So, you cannot have everything, even if you have the facility. You might be seeking something outside the country. And that is why we encourage politicians to be honest when you are in opposition”.

The office of the presidency on Sunday, March 30 announced that the vice president will be receiving further medical care in the UK following a sudden illness that occurred on Friday, March 28, 2025, despite earlier treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Center on Saturday, March 29, 2025.

This raised many concerns about the state of the country’s healthcare prompting calls for efforts to improve Ghana’s health infrastructure.

The NPP has begun accusing the NDC of going contrary to claims they made when in opposition.

According to them, the NDC faulted the idea of former vice-president Dr. Bawumia traveling to the UK for treatment.

Mr. Mohammed said the NDC has been dishonest about issues in the country and has called on them to eschew dishonesty and stay with facts.

“You know, the current foreign minister said that public officers should be stopped from seeking medical care abroad. Today, he had to arrange all the diplomatic processes. The same person who said that public officers must be stopped from seeking medical care abroad.

“But he had to arrange those facilities for our good professor, Her Excellency the Vice President, to access medical care outside. So, it is there. And that is why we are saying that these people in government today are being exposed in their ways”.
