The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has asserted that it is not opposed to the West African Examination Council’s (WAEC) investigation into examination malpractices but rather emphasizes that the process must be conducted fairly and efficiently.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, February 19, NUGS President Daniel Korley Botchway emphasized that WAEC’s decision to withhold the results of thousands of students is unfair and an abuse of power.
“NUGS has never said WAEC should not go through its process. We wrote to WAEC on January 2, after they released the results on December 29, 2024, because we felt that the number of withheld results was very high, and some schools have already started giving admissions, and we urged WAEC to ensure innocent students could continue their education,” he stated.

According to him, the delayed release of results has unfairly benefited some students, allowing them to progress with their education while others are left behind, awaiting their results.
“This is the unfairness we are talking about. If WAEC had not finished with the examining process, they shouldn’t have released any of the results. Because right now, they have created an unfair advantage for some to be able to go to school while others have to wait another year.”
Mr. Botchway further stated that they are exploring the possibility of taking legal action as a last resort.
“We are concerned about the whole process. And we are concerned about the fact that this should not happen again. And we intend to go to court to seek a declaration that the process of examining whether someone has copied or not should be part of the examining process.”
“Our position is simple: WAEC should do its job, but do it well. If investigations are incomplete, results should not be released selectively. This must not happen again,” he concluded.
