Family of 4 escapes near-fatal accident

A female driver, Theresa Akayibire, and her three children narrowly escaped injury after being involved in an accident with a tipper truck loaded with sand. The incident occurred on Friday, 7th February, 2025, at the Upper East Regional Hospital Junction, along the road connecting the hospital to Zaare.
The sound of a heavy crash gathered a number of people to the scene where a woman believed to be in her late 30s driving a Corolla with registration number GS 400–24 ran into a moving tipper truck with registration number GR 2505 G.
Eyewitnesses report that the woman with the Corolla was coming from the hospital side, trying to curve towards the Zaare Preparatory Model School, while the tipper truck driver was also moving in the same direction from the Holy Ghost Temple lane.

Both vehicles unfortunately met in the middle of the road. Eyewitness added that although the Corolla car was in front of the tipper truck at the junction, the distance was so close for the tipper truck to apply breaks, and so in an attempt to dodge, the tipper truck hit it at the right front wheel, causing serious damage to the corolla.

In recounting the incident to the people gathered after the accident, Theresa stated that she is a frequent user of the road and she is always careful when approaching that particular section, but she is surprised that she didn’t notice the tipper truck before taking the curve.

“I was just moving slowly, but I didn’t see the tipper truck coming; I only saw it when it was almost about to hit me, but I thank God that my children and I were not hurt. I was taking them home from school, she said.
With no support for Theresa to repair her car after the accident, the tipper truck driver left the scene after spending a few minutes there without even taking her contact to later find out their condition.

The corolla was, however, moved to a nearby mechanic shop for repairs.
Traders and road users are therefore urging the government, the Ghana Police Service, and the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly to take immediate steps to salvage the recurring accidents on the road.
