Your Single Term as President Was a Result of Your Administration’s Performance- Akufo Addo Reminds Mahama

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has taken a swipe at his predecessor, John Dramani Mahama, when he toured the Ahafo Region. The President intimated that the fact that Mahama served only one term in office shows something about him as a leader. This was in response to Mahama’s refusal to debate the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, whom he believes is not his equal.

He had said debating Bawumia would only raise the Vice President’s status to his, a claim President Akufo-Addo described as untenable. The President noted that operating on only one term as President did not place him above Bawumia and that he should not shy away from debate on the basis of seniority. Akufo-Addo asked the supporters to appreciate the leadership qualities and input of Bawumia, arguing those attested to the Vice President leading Ghana well.

In jest, the President pointed out how Mahama uniquely stands out as the only president in the Fourth Republic to have one term as president, and for poor performance at that. He said that the class of one-term presidents was the only distinction Mahama holds and therefore he should not refuse to debate Bawumia. Akufo-Addo’s remarks are a soft-serve reminder of Mahama’s past performance and a booster for Bawumia’s campaign.

Light-hearted, that indeed could be between the two leaders, yet it adds hilarity to the political scenario and one gets to witness how the President shields his Vice President while subtly discrediting the performance of the previous president.
